Homemade Candy Apples Close-Up

Crisp apples coated in a glossy, sweet candy shell make for a classic treat perfect for fall or festive occasions. This homemade candy apple recipe is simple, delicious, and sure to impress.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples (Granny Smith or Fuji), washed and dried
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 tsp red food coloring (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon (optional)
  • 6 wooden sticks
  • Cooking spray or oil, for greasing

Instructions

  1. Insert wooden sticks into the stem end of each apple and lightly grease a baking sheet.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, and water. Stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves.
  3. Attach a candy thermometer to the pan. Without stirring, bring the mixture to a boil and cook until the temperature reaches 300°F (hard crack stage).
  4. Remove from heat and quickly stir in red food coloring and cinnamon, if using.
  5. Working quickly, dip each apple into the candy mixture, turning to coat evenly.
  6. Place coated apples on the greased baking sheet to cool and harden.
  7. Let the candy apples cool completely before serving, about 30 minutes.

Notes

For a festive twist, roll dipped apples in chopped nuts, sprinkles, or crushed cookies before the candy hardens.
